LUKI HAD worried that he’d need to manufacture some errand to send Sonny on so that he could get in ahead of time and do all the candle lighting and other preparation. But it turned out to be unnecessary, as Sonny—in a tone that sounded like he was making up an errand himself—said, “I’ll have to drop you at the condo, but I’ll be back shortly. I… um… I told Jade I’d drop her Bear off to sleep with, and… also… her poodle pajamas.”

Luki eyed him suspiciously, pretty certain he just wanted to check on Jade, but ultimately decided to pretend Sonny wasn’t the worst liar on the planet. After all, Sonny being absent did fit his own plans nicely. So he nodded, kissed Sonny’s blushed-purple cheek, and went in to set up. The process reminded him a bit of laying an undercover net for a sting—a list of things to set in motion, check them off, lie in wait. Only in this case it was more like light fires, fill the tub, queue the music, and wait with remote in hand behind the door, so antsy and tingly that he just about bit through his lip.

The condo was practically soundproof, so he couldn’t hear Sonny’s approach, but he heard the key twist in the lock and the heavy door push open. Luki pressed the button, and the music came on. Vintage Temptations, singing just what needed to be said, about giving your one and only “more love and more joy” than even time could destroy.
